Expertise

Julia is the creator of Plated Cravings, a trusted resource for authentic German recipes and cozy, European-inspired comfort food. Her work has been featured by Brit + Co and various online publications. She specializes in demystifying traditional German dishes like schnitzel, spaetzle, and Black Forest cake, making them accessible to home cooks around the world using local grocery store ingredients.

Beyond her heritage recipes, Julia is an expert in modern kitchen appliances, developing an extensive library of tested-and-perfected air fryer recipes designed to make weeknight cooking easier without sacrificing flavor.

Experience

Julia credits her deep love of food to her childhood in Germany, where she spent countless hours in the kitchen with her Oma and Opa. While her grandfather passed down a serious sweet tooth, her grandmother taught her the art of traditional German home cooking, from Sunday roasts to baking cakes with seasonal fruit from their backyard.

She met her husband, Peter, in high school, and their shared passion for food became the foundation of their relationship. After graduating from university and moving to Munich, they spent their weekends exploring new restaurants and cooking up a storm in their tiny apartment kitchen.

In 2015, Julia launched her blog (originally called Bavarian Epicure) to document their culinary adventures. A year later, it was rebranded to Plated Cravings to better reflect her mission: sharing fresh, homemade food that brings people to the table.

In 2018, Julia and Peter took a leap of faith, selling their belongings and moving to Canada with just four suitcases. Today, Plated Cravings has grown into a destination for millions of readers seeking a taste of Europe and reliable, family-tested recipes.

5 Quick Things About Julia

  1. She has a serious sweet tooth. Itโ€™s a trait inherited directly from her Opa. If there is fresh cake or a batch of cookies on the counter, they won’t last long.
  2. Sheโ€™s a brave adventurer. In 2018, she moved across the ocean from Germany to Canada with nothing but her husband and four suitcases to start a new life.
  3. Her sous-chef is furry. Shortly after moving to Canada, the family adopted Beau, an Australian Labradoodle who loves being in the kitchen (mostly hoping for dropped crumbs).
  4. She values “Gemรผtlichkeit.” This untranslatable German word means a state of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer. It is the secret ingredient in all her comfort food recipes.
  5. She is a big introvert. While she loves connecting with readers online, she is a true homebody at heart. Her ideal Friday night isn’t found at a crowded party but in a quiet evening at home with Peter, Beau, and a good movie (and snacks, of course) after tucking the boys into bed.
