How to find the best Brussels sprouts
- Brussels Sprouts are a popular winter vegetable! They are in season from September to March in North America.
- In general, the smaller ones tend to be sweeter. The larger they are, the more they will taste like cabbage.
- The leaves should be tightly packed, and the Brussels sprouts should be firm, have a uniform, vivid green color without brown spots.
- Many grocery stores keep them on ice, which prevents the leaves from turning yellow and keeps them fresh for a longer time.
- Sprouts on the stalk will stay fresh longer than those sold individually.
How to cut them, so they cook evenly
Start by cutting off the stem and remove any wilted leaves. Then cut small to medium-sized brussels sprouts in half through the stem. If they’re larger, cut them into thirds.
TIP: Make sure to buy even-sized sprouts, so they cook evenly!
How to make Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts
Check out the printable recipe card below for detailed instructions and measurements!
- Preheat Air Fryer to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Season Brussels sprouts and toss them with olive oil.
- Air Fry Brussels sprouts for 12-15 minutes, shaking basket once halfway through.
- Transfer brussels sprouts to a serving dish and drizzle with apple cider vinegar, toss to coat.
How to Store Brussels Sprouts
Fresh: Once you take them home, you should store them unwashed and untrimmed in a plastic bag in the fridge, preferably in a crisper or produce drawer. They will keep for at least one week but will lose sweetness and become a little bit more bitter with age.
Cooked: Cooked Brussels sprouts will keep for three days stored in an airtight container in the fridge.
Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts Variations
There are so many ways to make this dish your own! Try out some of my favorites:
- Vinegar: The recipe calls for apple cider vinegar, but you can also use Balsamic vinegar or
- Citrus: Instead of vinegar, you can also toss the cooked sprouts in lemon or lime juice. Adding a bit of lemon/lime zest adds so much flavor!
- Cheese: Grated Parmesan Cheese is my favorite! But crumbled soft cheeses, like feta, goat, or blue cheese, are great too.
- Nuts: Toasted Pine nuts, pecan pieces, chopped walnuts, or slivered almonds would make a great topping!
- Bacon: Crumbled crispy bacon makes a great addition!
- Fresh Herbs: Parsley, thyme, and basil all go well with this dish! Sprinkle some chopped herbs on top after cooking.
- Sugar: A drizzle of maple syrup or honey makes a great addition and adds some sweetness!
