Air Fryer Toast is the easiest way to make toasted bread! It’s even easier than the toaster and comes out perfectly crispy and golden every time.

Toasted bread in a bread basket.

Making golden toast has to be one of the easiest things to do, right? Well, what if I told you it could be even easier?

This Air Fryer Toast is my go-to toasting method. It’s so easy and the toast comes out just right every, single time. Plus, since the air fryer can be used in so many other ways, you can clear out unnecessary appliances and just get rid of your toaster altogether! Win!

Did you know that you can also use your air fryer to make French toast? Just dip your favorite bread in a simple batter and air fry until golden. Check out my Air Fryer French Toast recipe for more details!

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • Easier than the toaster. I didn’t know anything could be easier than the toaster until I tried this method. Just layer a few pieces in the air fryer and let it work its magic.
  • Toasts perfectly. Toasters are notorious for uneven cooking. With the air fryer, you get that crispy texture all the way around every time and you can easily check on it.
  • Cooks for a crowd. Depending on your air fryer, you can toast up to 4 or more slices at once.

Different kinds of bread stacked on a marble board.

Toasting bread in the air fryer is about as easy as it gets. Add the bread to the air fryer and cook at 390ºF until toasted to your liking. For me, this is around 4-5 minutes. Don’t forget to flip halfway through for even toasting!

Oven-style Air Fryer: You can make even more toast at the same time in an Air Fryer Oven (affiliate link). Just lay the bread out on the air fryer trays and toast.

Basket-style Air Fryer: Depending on your air fryer and the size of the bread you can make 2-4 slices of bread at the same time. The bread can overlap slightly.

Expert tips for success

  • No need to grease the air fryer. There’s really no risk of bread sticking to the basket, so greasing it or spraying it with oil spray isn’t necessary.
  • Butter the bread. Adding a little bit of butter adds flavor and gives the toast that delicious golden-brown color. You can use butter or vegan butter. I recommend only buttering on one side and not flipping the bread.
  • Air fry in a single layer. While the bread slices can overlap slightly, you’ll get the best results if they’re placed in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  • Flip halfway through. This ensures that the toast gets cooked evenly all the way around.
  • Keep an eye on it. Cook less or longer depending on how toasty you like your bread. I always recommend checking it early, then adding time as needed so it’s toasted just the way you like it!

Recipe FAQs

Can you make toast in an air fryer?

Absolutely! The air fryer is great for so many things…and, as it turns out, it makes an amazing toaster too.

How long do you toast bread in the air fryer?

That depends on how well toasted you like your bread. I give an estimate of around 4-5 minutes, but I recommend checking early, then adding time as needed. That way it can be as soft or as toasty as you like!

Keep in mind that different types or thicknesses of bread will take different amounts of time to toast.

Do you need to flip toast in the Air Fryer?

No, you don’t need to but the bread will toast more evenly and be golden all around if you flip it halfway through.

Serve it with

You can serve your air fryer toast any way that you’d serve regular toast! Enjoy it next to a serving of ham and cheese breakfast casserole, with scrambled eggs and bacon, as part of your favorite sandwich, or as a snack layered with your favorite spreads or toppings! Here are a few ideas:

  • Nut butter. Peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, Nutella, you name it.
  • Avocado. Who doesn’t love smashed avocado toast? Keep it simple with salt and pepper or spice things up with sliced cherry tomatoes, sautéed greens, etc.
  • Jam. Any of your favorite fruity jams or preserves work great.
  • Cinnamon and sugar. A spread of butter topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar is so simple yet so delicious.
  • Cream cheese. Use a sweeter cream cheese topped with sliced fruit or go the savory route with garden veggie cream cheese, chive cream cheese, etc.
  • Garlic. You can easily make a simple garlic toast, by spreading some butter on one side and sprinkling it with garlic powder or minced garlic before air frying. Don’t flip the bread! Looking for a more indulgent version, check out my Air Fryer garlic bread recipe.

Leftovers and Storage

Toasted bread is definitely best right away, so I recommend toasting only as many slices as you’ll need.

If you do happen to have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for a couple of days. When you’re ready to serve again, air fry for 1-2 minutes to warm.

Air Fryer Breakfast Recipes

The Air Fryer is the perfect kitchen gadget for smaller kitchens and can easily replace a toaster and an oven. It can not only air fry toast but also crisp up bacon or bake a perfect fruit crisp. Here are a few more easy breakfast recipes that you might not expect to be made in an Air Fryer:
