- Bread – Thick sliced, day-old bread works best, for example, brioche, challah, or texas toast. I love to use brioche bread because it’s sweet, has a great texture, and soaks up the egg mixture very well.
- Eggs – I use large eggs. The eggs make a custard-like mixture with the milk.
- Milk – You can use any type of milk for this recipe. I use full-fat milk but 2% or plant-based milk like oat or almond milk works well too.
- Vanilla extract – Vanilla goes very well with the custard mixture and adds a lot of flavor.

- Prep: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Preheat Air Fryer to 380 degrees F.
- Dip: Dip the bread into the mixture or place bread in a shallow baking pan and pour batter over the bread. Let the bread soak for about 1 minute per side until the mixture is absorbed.
- Drip: Spray the air fryer basket with oil spray. Allow any excess custard mixture to drip off the bread, then transfer to the Air Fryer basket.
- Air Fry: Air fry for 6-8 minutes or until golden brown, flipping halfway through.
- Serve: Serve sprinkled with powdered sugar, maple syrup, and berries.

- Preheat: Preheat your air fryer for the best result!
- Avoid over-soaking: Don’t let the bread sit in the egg mixture for too long! It will soak up too much liquid and get soggy. Using day-old or slightly stale bread works best to avoid over-soaking the bread.
- Less mess: Let excess custard drip off before transferring to the air fryer basket.
- Grease: If your air fryer basket is not non-stick I recommend spraying it with oil spray (not cooking spray) before placing the bread into it to avoid sticking.
- Bread: We love brioche. But other sliced bread works too! The denser the bread the longer it needs to soak. A rustic sourdough, for example, needs to soak longer than very soft sandwich bread.
- Soaking the bread: An easy and quick way to soak multiple slices is to lay them all out on a baking sheet and pour the batter over the top.
- Single Layer: For the best result, avoid overlapping the bread. Depending on your air fryer you have to work in batches. My large air fryer can make 4 slices at the same time.
- Air Fryer: Cooking time can vary depending on the power of your Air Fryer! Always keep an eye on the food when you try a new recipe.

The best bread for french toast in my opinion is brioche bread sliced about 1-inch thick! It tastes great by itself but making french toast with it makes it especially delicious. But you can also use challah bread, texas toast, or even sourdough. Just make sure that the slices are thick and the bread is day-old or slightly stale for the best french toast.
French toast takes about 7-8 minutes at 380 degrees F in the air fryer. But depending on the power of your Air Fryer the cooking time might change.
There are a few things you can do to make sure the French toast doesn’t stick to the basket or pan. Preheat your Air Fryer. Spray the basket with oil spray or use parchment paper. Let excess custard drip off before transferring the bread to the pan.
Variation: Air Fryer French Toast Sticks
Making French toast sticks in the Air Fryer is a fun variation of this recipe that is super popular with kids and makes it easy to dip the sticks into maple syrup or your favorite spread.
Just cut the bread into sticks before dipping it into the custard mix. This is also a great way to use the space in your air fryer basket more efficient. The cooking time will be shorter, about 5-6 minutes, but the temperature stays the same.

Storage and freezing
French toast tastes best fresh from the air fryer but can also be refrigerated or frozen and easily reheated. Perfect for busy mornings!
Leftovers: Once air-fried, leftovers keep for 2-3 days in an airtight container or ziplock bag in the refrigerator. They can be easily reheated in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for a few minutes until they’ve reached your desired temperature.
Freezing: Leftovers can also be frozen in an airtight container or ziplock bag for up to 3 months. Reheat from frozen in the air fryer or toaster.
